Borrow library materials
Use the MNPALs Fitzgerald Library catalog to view the collection.
Your SMU ID is required for all materials check out. This card also gives you library privileges at Winona State Library, although loan periods may differ. For your protection, students you send to the library to check out materials in your name should present your card.
You will be able to search the catalog freely off campus, but if you want to place an item on hold, check your borrowing record, or perform other personalized tasks you will need to log on using your SMU user name and password.
You may borrow most library materials for a semester and most items are renewable. See Circulation Policies.
Order new library materials
Your recommendations are essential for developing a sound collection that supports the University curriculum.
Each department has a budget for library items. Please check with your department chair for more information about how your department uses its library budget.
You may send orders to your library liaison, use our online form to send orders to our Acquisitions Manager, Amanda Bauer, or just stop in the library and give your orders to Amanda in the Tech Services area in whatever form that works for you. Library order forms in print are available and can be sent to you if requested.
To ensure expenditure for the fiscal year, please submit orders by March 1.

Place materials on reserve
To insure the safety of students and staff during the Covid-19 pandemic, we are not putting physical items on reserve. Check with your liaison librarian to see about ordering streaming videos or providing scans of book chapters and other materials.
Stop in at the Circulation Desk to set up the your reserves or contact you library liaison. Allow one business day for library staff to ready items for reserve check out.
Students may check for reserve information online in the library catalog or at the Circulation Desk in the Reserves Binder. They will need to present their Saint Mary’s ID card to check out reserves. Materials ordinarily are used in the building for two hours and may go out overnight one hour before closing only if you so specify. Faculty may determine the loan limitations as needed.
Borrow from other libraries (Interlibrary Loan)
Books or journal articles not in the Fitzgerald Library collection may be obtained through interlibrary loan.

Find your library liaison
Your Library Liaison is the primary library staff member responsible for communicating with your department about library collections, functions, and services. You can call on your liaison to get information about your department budget, to place orders, to air concerns, or to answer any questions about how you or your students might use library services and collections.

Reserve a library classroom space
Faculty may reserve a study room in the library for a special session or a regular class. Contact the library director, Laura Oanes at email@example.com or 507 457 6909. All rooms in the McEnery Center must be reserved online. Go to Astra Room Scheduling to access the reservation form.
Link to library resources in Blackboard or in your syllabus
Provide direct access for your students to library resources in Blackboard or in your online syllabus. Follow the directions below to create library links.
If you have an assignment that calls for students to use a certain database, you can provide a link to that database directly in Blackboard or in your online syllabus. Go to the “Library Databases” page to select the database. Just right click on the database title and choose “Copy Link Location” (in Firefox) “copy link address” (in Chrome), or “Properties” (in Explorer), copy the URL, and then paste it into your online syllabus or Blackboard page. Do not use the URL that comes up in the address bar when you are searching the database. It will not work for future sessions.
All of the URLs for databases should have the library’s proxy server address added to them. This enables users to access the databases from off campus. Our proxy server address is http://ezproxy.smumn.edu/login?url= and you can add this a URL if you see it is lacking. So the URL for Academic Search Premier will look like this:
Linking to Journal Articles
To link to a specific journal article in Blackboard or your online syllabus you need to find the permanent URL or what is often called the “persistent URL.” The URL that comes up in the address bar for the article will not work over time.
In EBSCO databases you will find this link in the Tools column at the right of the article, referred to as the “Permalink.”
In Proquest databases the persistent link is referred to as the “Document URL” and is located at the end of the article.
Once you have the permanent URL, you will need to add our proxy server address to it, so that your students can access the article when off campus. Just add http://ezproxy.smumn.edu/login?url to the front of any permanent URL you want to use. So a persistent URL for an article in ProQuest would look like this:

Track a citation
Track journal citations in Publication Finder. Here you can find out if we have the journal you need in our collection, online or in print. If we have it, follow the links to get to the actual article. If we don’t, submit an Interlibrary Loan request for the article.
If you have a citation for a book or other media submit it to WorldCat. The catalog will let you know if the item is in our collection and, if it is not, you can follow the on-screen directions for an interlibrary loan.

The library, in tandem with the Instructional Technology and IT departments, hosts monthly professional development sessions that demonstrate how new technologies are being used to enhance teaching and learning.
This is your opportunity to see what your colleagues are doing in the classroom or to let others know what new strategies you are using.
